A form-driven Rhino scheme deserves motion, not a rebuild in another package

The usual route from a Rhino scheme to a moving image runs through another application: export, rebuild materials, set up cameras, render every frame. For a form still changing week to week, that rebuild is out of date before it finishes. This keeps the scheme in Rhino: render one viewport to a still, describe how the camera should move across it, and get a clip without the model leaving the file it lives in.

A still frame from a cinematic architectural walkthrough clip

How the Rhino & Grasshopper plugin handles it

  1. Set a perspective viewport with a real lens

Use a perspective viewport and set the lens length you would photograph the building with. Wide-angle distortion in the still is carried straight into the clip.

  2. Capture it with the toolbar button

Click the VotexArch button with that viewport active and pick Renders. Render the capture to a photoreal still first — the clip will start from that frame.

  3. Describe a move that follows the form

In Walkthroughs, attach the still and describe the move: a slow track along a curved facade, a rise over a roof. Moves that follow the geometry show it off; moves across it tend to blur it.

What Rhino & Grasshopper hands over

Rhino’s capture is a real ViewCapture render of the active viewport, not a screenshot, so the still you animate is as clean as the viewport’s display mode allows. Grasshopper needs no separate export: bake the result and it is captured like any hand-modelled geometry.

The thing that goes wrong

Curved forms change silhouette quickly as a camera moves, and the clip has to guess the parts of the surface the still did not show. A slow move along the form holds up; a fast orbit around a doubly curved volume is where the surface starts to drift from what you modelled.

Do you preserve geometry?

Yes. Every render pass is constrained to your source geometry and camera position, so walls, proportions, and perspective stay locked instead of being reimagined by the model.

Models available for this

Every model draws from the same credit balance, and a credit is only spent on a successful generation.

Questions

Does the clip follow my Grasshopper parameters?
No. The clip is generated from one rendered still, so it knows the geometry only as it appears in that frame. Change the definition and you capture and render again; nothing is linked back to the parameters.
How long can a clip be?
That depends on the model you pick in Walkthroughs, and each is billed per second of output. Short clips are also the ones that hold closest to the modelled form, so shorter is usually better here, not just cheaper.
